Tacos In Charleston

Charleston might be famous for its Lowcountry cuisine, but the Holy City also knows how to deliver big flavor in a small package—especially when it comes to tacos. From traditional street style to creative fusion twists, Charleston's taco spots stand out for their bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and inviting atmospheres.

What makes taco places unique is their ability to reflect personality and culture in every bite. Some keep it classic with authentic Mexican recipes passed down for generations, while others mix in Southern flair or unexpected global influences. Whether you’re craving a perfect carnitas taco or something more adventurous, Charleston’s taco scene has something for everyone.

Cantina 76

Cantina 76—which now has locations in Columbia, Charleston, Kiawah, and Greenville—is a lively, Mexican-inspired restaurant and bar known for its fresh, creative meals, hand-crafted margaritas, and welcoming atmosphere. Independently owned and operated in South Carolina, Cantina 76 has become a go-to destination for flavorful dining. Whether you're stopping in for lunch, dinner, or happy hour, you'll find a diverse crowd enjoying the restaurant’s signature tacos, premium tequila selection, and upbeat vibe. And did we mention they’re dog-friendly? That’s a win in our book.

Rebel Taqueria

Rebel Taqueria’s vibe may scream “biker bar” but that better not stop you from venturing in for one of their flavor-packed tacos, burritos, rice bowls and more. Loyal fans rave about their Quesa Birria but their Brisket Barbacoa, Flamin’ hot, and Lowcountry Crunch all hit the spot too. And just when you think you have the place figured out, they do something like ramen specials or a mouth watering fried chicken sandwich. You know, just to keep you on your toes. There’s always something up their sleeve at Rebel Taqueria, so stop in for a cold beer, $5 Rebel Margarita during happy hour (Monday-Friday, 4-6 pm), and any selection of their wildly popular tacos—you won’t be disappointed.

Minero Mexican Grill & Cantina

Previously open in a funky upstairs spot off of East Bay Street that closed in 2020 to the devastation of many loyal customers, Minero Mexican Grill & Cantina reopened  in 2022, bringing a family-friendly and inviting Mexican dining experience to the heart of Johns Island. With a chef-driven menu and a commitment to quality, every dish reflects authentic flavors that never disappoint. The expansive indoor-outdoor bar, climate-controlled patio, and spacious picnic area make Minero a go-to spot for families, friends, and alfresco foodies. Whether you're sipping on handcrafted margaritas or indulging in bold, flavorful dishes like their cult-favorite Minero Burrito, enchiladas, or even their tableside-sauce-tossed Minero Wings, you know why locals celebrated the day Minero reopened here in Charleston. Two years was two years too long.

Cachita’s/Papi’s Taqueria

What started as a single food truck operation in 2020 between friends Erik Hernandez and José Cruz, is quickly becoming a growing empire throughout Charleston. Now that same amazing team is running the kitchen at Papi’s Taqueria on Isle of Palms, cranking out flavorful tacos, a Mexican Cuban Sandwich, and their Cachiburrito amongst other mouthwatering options. But don’t think that just because they’re posted up inside an IOP brick and mortar that you can’t find them hanging out food truck window anymore. Cachita’s still operates their food trucks off of Chuck Dawley Blvd in Mount Pleasant and Indigo Reef Brewing Company. Just one look at this issue’s cover and we bet you’ll be making dinner plans to stop by one of their locations sooner than later.

El Molino Supermarket

Is it a Tortillería? A Panadería? A carnicería? Or a grocery store? How about all of that… and then some. El Molino Supermarket—now open in West Ashley and North Charleston—is the only place you can go and walk out with specialty Mexican ingredients, butchered meats, scooped ice cream, tchotchkes you didn’t know you needed, and a pizza box full of tacos. It’s a one-stop-shop of flavor and convenience, honestly. Pop in to order your tacos to enjoy there, take to go, or even buy the pre-seasoned meat to cook yourself for at-home taco night. It may look like a grocery store you only go in for a super specific Mexican spice, but we promise you, your first time will not be your last. Get yourself a pizza box of tacos—it’s amazing

Matador

Perfectly located on Meeting Street in downtown Charleston, Matador blends authentic, scratch-made Mexican cuisine with an extensive selection of tequila and agave spirits. On weekends, you can check out their mezcalería bar, perfect for those looking to explore unique cocktails and smoky mezcal. The stunning, dramatic interior strikes the perfect balance between cozy and stylish, making it an ideal spot for happy hour or date night. Indulge in flavorful dishes like Guajillo chile-marinated pork tacos, Baja fish tacos, and Poblano Carnitas while soaking in the beautiful atmosphere. No doubt, this is a more sophisticated taco eating experience.

Santi’s

Now with three locations across Charleston—West Ashley, Downtown, and Mount Pleasant—Santi’s offers an experience for your belly and your visual senses. Their over-the-top—yet somehow never “too much”—decor is festive to the next level. Vibrant, fun, and always buzzing with good energy, sitting down to a communal table with a large group of friends or snagging a table for two always feels like the start to a great night. And with their simple but authentic Mexican selections you can’t go wrong… or home hungry. Portions are large, flavors are on point, and the staff is friendly—it’s a win every time. We suggest their chimichangas, the Wet Burrito Grande, or selection of any tacos. And of course, endless chips and salsa.

Tiki Taco

Owned and operated by husband-wife duo, Shawn and Gabriella Healy, Tiki Taco is a multi-location success in the Lowcountry, bringing authentic street tacos, a vibrant atmosphere, and quality service to each visit. Now with four locations across North Charleston and Summerville, there’s never a Tiki Taco too far out of reach to enjoy their daily specials, live music, and special events.

Taco Boy

Opened by Karalee Nielsen Fallert in 2006, the very first Taco Boy sat along Folly Road, which now operates just a block or so over to accommodate for their growth. And growth they’ve had. Since 2006, Fallert and her team have gone on to open five more locations—two more in the Charleston area, two in the Asheville area, and one in Charlotte. Their brand is just as bold and bright as the flavors on their plate, with exciting taco flavors such as Kimchi Beef, Crispy Avocado, and Tinga. You can join them at any location for happy hour from 3-6 every day of the week or $5 house margaritas on Tequila Tuesdays.

Now before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, we have to say: there are A LOT of incredible taco spots across the Lowcountry, and these are just a small sampling of where to try. Whether you’re looking for a baja-style, tex-mex, traditional taqueria, or more of a chef-driven fusion taco, you are sure to find something that hits the spot. Anyone else thinking taco taste tour? We know we are.
