Tasty Trips: Saddle Up For Fall in Thoroughbred Country
By Hayley Hutson
When it comes to Thoroughbred Country, there’s far more to experience than just equestrian life. The region is teeming with picturesque small towns worth exploring, from hotspots like Aiken and North Augusta to lesser-known gems like Barnwell and Denmark. As a Charlotte local, I find myself hopping around undiscovered parts of the Carolinas every season – but especially in the fall. There’s something about the vibrant foliage, cool breeze, and smells of freshly baked goods in the air that I can never seem to resist. My fiancé, the yin to my yang, is always up for the ride, which makes this time of year especially exciting.
During the fall, Thoroughbred Country comes to life with a whirlwind of exciting events. You can experience the region’s largest free outdoor gospel festival or enjoy the thrill of the Oktoberfest Horse Trials in Aiken. For an outing that combines flavorful bites with spooky fun and live music, you have to visit the BBQ, Blues & Boos Festival in Barnwell. Whether it’s fall festivities or smalltown charm you’re after, you can find it here among the rolling countryside.
Here are a few of my favorite places to eat, drink, shop, play, and stay on your next adventure.
WHERE TO EAT:
Barnwell Caribbean (Barnwell)
Bet you didn’t know you could escape to the islands without leaving Thoroughbred Country. Barnwell Caribbean brings the bold, bright flavors of the Caribbean without a passport. The jerk chicken is phenomenal and the loaded potatoes are not to be missed.
